So there is a nice, out of production, Whitman Classic Canada Large Cent album on sale on our beloved sales site,( 330897093977,) listed by a US resident who will not ship to Canada! I just don't get it. It is dead simple to ship the album to Canada by USPS - just put a different address on the box. Sorry, just had to vent a little. Now I feel better.

I buy all manner of merchandise out of the US, on and off e***, and always get positive feedback from the Sellers that they got paid quickly and the shipping process went very smoothly. I just think that even if there is a little more to the shipping, a Seller is likely going to be more than compensated, especially on an item like this, with the increased bidder activity from Canada. I have not been an active Seller for a while but always included US buyers in my auction. It sounds like you have had some bad experiences - can you share details?

It's a matter of hassle. People in Canada, and Florida are hassles. I learned that the hard way.
I won't buy from people in Florida or Georgia due to monetary threat assessment, across the boards on all auction sites.
My apology if any feelings were injured in this production.

I can understand not wanting to ship outside the USA or Canada, but between the 2?
My dear american friends, its not like we are a third world country with a corrupt postal system. As far as being lumped in with Florida and Georgia... speachless!
I have several thousand transactions (both buying and selling to and from the USA) and have NEVER had to fall back on seller protection. the way I figure it I have made more than enough extra from offering to ship to both countries that if I had to eat the cost of a sale it has been more than worth it.
Very frustrating to be refused to be able to bid on a canadian item, do the seller's not realize they would probably get a lot higher final price by offering canadian collectables TO CANADIANS?!?!

I guess they feel us Canadians are in the market to rip them off for a $10 item. What a joke.

He's getting bidders anyway, so he doesn't care about Canadians. But good gravy, he lives in Fredonia, NY. On a clear day he can see Canada!

From my many experiences with US sellers, I found that Americans are reluctant to ship outside the USA for three main reasons.
1) For large items, they have already calculated the shipping and found the costs exorbitant and have decided to list as US only since it is unlikely that most foreign buyers will pay high shipping charges.
2) They are afraid of customs paperwork. They think it will take too much time.
3) They are wary of foreign buyers who might be engaged in some scam and that the seller will winding up losing money in the end. In theory PayPal protects against this.
Reason #1 is valid. Reason #2 is bad business and results a lower maximum bid. Reason #3 is semi-valid. Most international buyers I have dealt with are honest and it is more likely that the postal workers at the other end that are engaged in the theft.

His auction template is probably set up that way. If you'd like to bid, send him a message asking if he'll change his policy since this item would tend to have a Canadian market. Maybe add a how-to-send-North note. Educated sellers are as valuable to the hobby as educated buyers.

Quote: I guess they feel us Canadians are in the market to rip them off for a $10 item. What a joke. No they feel that anyone anywhere could try to rip them off at any time. Which they do, and you can't even leave negative feedback for them when they try any more. (So do you think this activity is going up or down?) The only way we can cover ourselves as sellers is to provide proof of delivery which is cost prohibitive, especially on low dollar items. We will not ship outside the US, unless we know who it is. Also, and Canadians are not going to like this, but Canadians are by far the worst at begging (sometimes demanding) US sellers to lie on customs forms. We have been threatened with negative feedback many times if we don't lie. Sorry, we're not going to break federal law so Canadians can cheat on their taxes. Every single time, no matter how sweet Canadians ask, We forward your email and all your info to contact@cbsa.gc.ca and ebay. So if you wonder why all your packages get opened now...... Also, customs forms can add a trip to the post office. Mail carriers are not supposed to take them (mine does though), they must be dropped off if they are over 13 oz or are hand written. I wouldn't drive a $10 item ten miles to the post office. I'd rather sell it for $5 and stay home. But that wouldn't happen, a coin folder is going to get to roughly the same price whether Canadians are allowed to bid or not, it's a low dollar item with roughly a finite price.

i get not wanting to drive a $10 item to the post office, that's why I don't tend to offer $10 items unless they can be sent in a regular envelope with regular stamps (with a 3 line customs declaration label printed at home). i have had positive experiences asking sellers if they were willing to ship (i explain I know all abouts customs charges and that shipping costs and transit times might be more), but still many who simply refuse, some of them rudely. WHY would you refuse an intersting bidder? guess that's why the canadian economy is rolling, we like everybody! Straight facts from someone with a 5 figure number of ebay transactions.... and you forgot to quote the "sometimes demanding" part.

I've had Americans ask me to declare significantly lower values than the purchase price as well. I think it can be handled a lot nicer than reporting it to the government! If you aren't comfortable with doing it, then just reply saying that you don't want to jeopardize your business by doing so. ebay protects against negative feedback left for this reason (I've had to get ebay involved once because of this). Personally, I've "lost" many shipments going to the US, and in the past, they tended to be high value items. I'm not sure if it's people lying, or Customs or the Post Office stealing (I actually had 6 items I dropped off at Canada Post one day, all marked $100, never arrive... I don't think they left the post office). I know when I've lied and stated a much lower value, my items tend to be received more often.
