Coin-flipper - that's a nice grade NB 1/2p (EF - too bad it has those little round marks). If I were you, I would take a soft toothbrush and some water and give it a gentle brushing - the plastic bristles won't scratch bronze (unless you scrub like a maniac !). Wipe it on your t-shirt and it'll look much better.

Cnd44fan - you are off the police force - you goofed up the ID of the culprit. That is a counterfeit copy. I would need better photos to be sure of the type, but it looks like the flat-top 1, NS-4A1, PNS-451. It should be coinage alignment, engrailed, and looks to be VF (actually could be EF is it's better than the photo). There were also cast copies so if it has a porous surface it may be that kind. I would also give that one a quick, gentle brushing with penetrating oil, then rinse a lot with hot water (no soap on bronze).

Nice LC-15A1 Wade, EF? A t-shirt wipe for that one.

re page 14:

I'd rub that one a light rub on my t-shirt to get the dirt off and give it a bit of a shine. Sometimes it works wonders, no liquids necessary, won't harm it.

I must have missed this comment earlier,

no offense, but the last thing in the world I would do to a mid MS coin that is 200+ years old is 'give it a rub'.

it just takes a single abrasive piece of 'grit n grime' to leave some visible hairlines, effectively cutting the value in half (if not more).

I've seen you give the same advice more than once... unless it's a common date and/or worn below XF you aren't doing anyone any favors but putting this out there.

If Wade's token had pristine, smooth fields, I wouldn't have suggested wiping it. It's an over-strike that already had marked-up fields, and the eagle has obvious wear on the feet, chest, head, and wings, not my idea of an MS-62 coin.
1 cent test. Take a Geo VI cent that's really dirty. Have a good look with a loupe or a microscope, then give it a gentle brushing with a used toothbrush and a little water. Have a look for scratches. Then rub it on a t-shirt and let me know if you find scratches from cleaning it (bet you don't). If you took off patina, you did it all too hard.

For Wade's following post:
p.s. Geo VI copper is softer than old bronze + 50 years of experimenting = my response. I've tried everything under the sun over the years just to see what it does to silver, bronze and copper. Weren't you ever a curious young teenager who got a chemistry set for Christmas, or mad scientist, or both ? A drop of glycerine on a pile of potassium permanganate sure makes a great flaming mass ! An acetylene torch makes a red cent, oops, too hot, it's bending.
