cdn44fan, I really like your blacksmiths! I also have a BL37 and a few others and I am always looking out for more to learn about From what I've been led to believe is the tokens were produced with inconsistent dies and minting processes of sometimes inferior quality throughout; hoping the pass these coins looking as though they were already as worn and battered from use as many of the legitimate coins of the day in circulation were. It was clearly easier to make a coin that looked used than a perfect one resembling regal coin, and also easier to prey on those that didn't recognize the foreries easily Known for buying drinks for cheap at the end of the night when the candles were low and the bartender was tired lol

For those interested in Blacksmith tokens I recommend the book: Forgotten Coins of the North American Colonies, 25th Anniversary Edition by John Lorenzo. Chapter 1 covers the Canadian group.

Quote:1960NYGiants: Sent these two to PCGS early Dec 2018 and got them back today. MS64RB https://www.PCGS.com/cert/36314821 A very nice token 1960NYGiants. The uncirculated half penny 1850 with a significant part of their original red luster are not common. Thus, it seems to be the variety Courteau #018 (Rarity 8 of 10), and according to my research, I agree with Courteau that this variety is not very common. From my book for the variety Courteau #018:Obverse: Perfect letters and figure «1». From perfect and broken dies. When broken, with a light die crack through letter «upPer». Reverse: The stands of letters «TokeN» are weakly struck. The right stand of letter «banK» is fully struck. With a die crack close to the left of upper rosette.
I'm sorry if my English isn't perfect... I'm learning a little more every day.

Thank you @ainsivalavie.
I have a 2nd PCGS MS64RB example more brown than red. If I interpret your book correctly it is #030:
obverse: the <<baNK>> are both re-cut and no top serif to <<canaDa>>
reverse: no speck to left of <<Token>> with a die crack at left side of <<halF>> extending from the edge to where the cornucopias cross
I also noticed some interesting markers at <<oF>> and <<UPper>> and re-cut 5 and 0 in date on obverse along with a re-cut <<hAlf>> to the right, re-cut <<penNy>> to the right on the reverse.
I will try to post some photos for you.

Gene @1960NYGiants:Of course, I'm always up for seeing these little wonders :) Otherwise, if it helps you, here is an example of the Courteau #030 variety. Since the picture is not very clear, I put arrows where the die crack is located near the letter «hal F». -------------------------------- Otherwise, is this your token? Because it is the only Courteau #030 (PCGS - MS-64 R&B) that I know to date (At least, it's my hypothesis despite the low resolution photo in my possession).
