Pocket-Piece---Who-Has-One?

for the last several weeks this 2012 ASE has been in my pocket when I go out to feed the cats & find money each night. everything I find goes into the pocket with the ASE. it is being seasoned by all the coins & currency that I am fortunate enough to find, so it is also being trained. it doesn't become lucky just because I say so. it needs to understand why it is in my pocket, needs to be trained for it's new purpose, so I have to let it congregate with all my lucky finds, and it should - over time- become lucky, in that it will become an attractor for good fortune. for now it's my pocket piece. later it'll be my lucky pocket piece.

I've never carried a pocket piece before, so I get to watch it wear down very very slowly.

expect an update around my 2000th post. i'll set an alarm for it.

I've never had one, but it sounds cool.
This 1966 silver 50 cent has a red marker cross(which seems acetone resistant) on the reverse, so I'm thinking a life in the back pocket may get some of it off. Progress pics to follow.

Here is my progress as of May 2023. All the same coins as my last update a year ago, which doesn't usually happen. The Ike was a coin machine find that has been in my pocket since about New Years 2021. The Franklin was a circulation find, and been with me since April 7, 2020. And the Irish penny I've had since January 2022 (prior to that was a 1968 penny which I swapped out for this one, since this is my mother's birth year and from whom I inherited my Irish ancestry).

This topic reminded me of a line from a Garrison Keillor sketch, "Guy Noir, Private Eye":

"Her pants were so tight, you could read the dates on the coins in her front pocket."

(N.B.: If you don't know Garrison Keillor, he's an American humorist who used to do a variety show on National Public Radio. "Guy Noir" was a takeoff on Mickey Spillane-styled detective stories.)

I'm a bicentennial baby, and at some point in college, I came across this 24k gold plated 1776-1976 half dollar. It's the really cheesy kind that you'd buy from a magazine ad back in the 1980s. I carried that for a long time, especially when gambling in Atlantic City, NJ.

After college, I wore an Elgin pocket watch that my grandfather left to me when he passed. When my cell phone supplanted the pocket watch as my time keeper, I switched to the perforated Australian shilling. I found that in a box of international coins in my grandfather's basement. All were from allies or Axis nations, although a few coins had dates slightly after WWII.

All are looking good and I always love a family or historical connection. Ive posted elsewhere here that I inherited my great great grandfather's pocket piece, an 1851 large cent, back in 2015. It's very corroded, worn, and dark toned. I thought about either adding it to my pocket collection or purchasing a nicer example from the same year, but ultimately decided against either for the time being.

Welp, now I am down to just the 1971S Ike and the 1962 Irish penny. My 1960D Franklin half decided to take leave of me while on vacation last week. It is either in the cabin (not likely - wife looks carefully around everything when she packs up), on the ground by the pool, buried somewhere in the car, or one of my kids snatched it. I hold out hope it turns up somewhere - I had some good meaningful wear going on with it. Meanwhile, I told this story to one of my regular LCS guys who had a table set up at the local show last weekend, and he threw me a newer AU 1960 Franklin for $10. I may toss it in the pocket, but it seems too nice of a coin to do that with; the old one was a circulated one that I snagged for face, which is my preference for pocket pieces whenever possible.

I hope so, too!

Keep that one in nice shape! Find the missing one or acquire another "junk" half for the pocket.

I hope you find your Franklin, although that would honestly be a super exciting thing for a kid to find in the grass.

If there is any consolation, believing that is its fate should suffice.
