I've thought about using my 1895-O Barber half once I get a chance to replace it in my 7070. The only problem is that it's already no better than FR-02, and I'm afraid the date would quickly wear off. I like halves, so I would like to use one. I also have an 1853 A&R Seated half that I could use, probably AG.

Quote: Started this one about two months ago. Early days. I had an extra of this date I bought for melt. It is heavy in the pocket and makes a heck of a golf ball marker. Nice one.

I take this 2 euro coin all the time. The rim is polished by pocket already; and outer ring metal was oxidized some how.

Hey, about an hour and a half ago we took our two dogs to a trail about 10 minutes from our house. Before I left, I grabbed a very damaged 1922-S Peace and an 1899 Barber quarter. I'm thinking about keeping the quarter (about AG-G) as a pocket piece, along with another of the same date and grade until I can get a good circulated half or two. The one coin has a rim ding on the reverse, and the other has a small V shape scratched into Liberty's head. EDIT: After looking at the second coin, it's probably VG.

I went with all MS coins that way I knew all of the wear was from me.
If I was going for a lowball record I would start with an AG coin and keep an eye on it each day until it reached the point of just recognizable enough to still be graded.

Quote: I went with all MS coins that way I knew all of the wear was from me. This is my philosophy somewhat. I hate to ruin an otherwise pristine coin but at the same time I like all the wear to be mine and only mine. My 2013 ASE started out BU and my 1883-O Morgan was probably AU (albeit damaged and an older cleaning). As soon as it comes in the mail I may be adding a 1983 Edmonton Universiade Canadian silver dollar (50% silver) to the rotation. It is an impaired proof with fingerprints but not otherwise circulated.

If I ever get a cheap nice cupronickel crown of some kind (1981 Charles and Diana, most likely), I'll stay with that one. For a few months, my pocket piece was an Australian 20 cent from 2008; I think I lost it at home at some point. Then I took a cartwheel penny... that was already worn down to the point that the date wasn't visible. I knew that these things can get ludicrously worn before they get unidentifiable, so I had no lowball hopes, but I thought it would at least wear in ways other than turning red in the more exposed places Now I'm walking around with a badly oxidized 1772-EM 2 kopek, basically for lack of anything else sufficiently interesting that I can afford to put there. I'll have to look for better candidates if I do my planned flea market visit on Sunday. I agree that I'd rather start off with a MS or AU coin, but that's not as much "I'd like all the wear to be mine" - though it would be a nice experiment - as "I want to actually be able to see the changes"... if the coin started out VG, for example, it would probably stay in the VG range for a long time, and I might not have the patience to get it further.

Although I like the idea of all the wear being mine, I would only want a historic coin as a pocket piece, and I would hate to do that with a historic MS coin.

I searched my first box of halves last weekend and pulled 15 NIFC, all BU. I liked the idea of tracking an UNC coin through circulation, so I decided to add one of those to the mix. I just hope I don't accidentally spend it.

Well, it's not worth much, but I thought it would be interesting to see how it wore down over time. The farthing sounds like a good pocket piece as well. Oh, and to CCF!

Here's the latest addition to my pocket. 1983 proof Edmonton Universiade commemorative silver dollar (Canadian, 50% silver). It's from my birth year. Came raw, with fingerprints toned into it. Cost me $10.30 shipped. It will ride around with the 1883-O Morgan for now.

Nice. I'm excited to see how a proof coin wears over time.
