1709 2 Escudos, Gold, Real Or Fake?

Groszy Pillar of the Community United States 589 Posts	Posted 05/27/2014 3:06 pm I have the chance to buy a 1709 2 escudos, raw. Looks real from the pictures provided, but I just want some opinions. Also, if I choose to buy it, in order to properly test it (on-site, since there's an option to refuse the coin if it's not proper), how might I test it there (without a scale, don't have one) other than a magnet? Does gold ring like silver if struck on the side with a dime or something? Got about 4.5 hours to decide whether I want it... Thanks. Report this Post to the Staff

MathieuMa Pillar of the Community France 1591 Posts	Posted 05/27/2014 4:14 pm This clearly looks like a cast copy to me. Gold don't get corroded, and details are not visible even in protected areas. It may be made from real gold though - the premium for such coin is so high that it's interesting to make those. Report this Post to the Staff

Is it: 1- Cast 2- Electrotype 2- Pt over Au 3- Au 4- Au over brass (Cu/Zn) or bronze (Cu/sn) 5- Brass (Cu/Zn) Also buying the KM Century Books are critical to confirm weights ... of different coins.
