Hello - I was wondering if anyone could be of any help, as I have search everywhere and cannot find any information on this coin. I recently put it up for auction on ebay, however within 30 minutes I have received numerous offers that ranged from $250 to $2100. I put it up with a starting bid of $99.99 and decided to let the market decide the price, however kind of want to know what exactly I have. I find plenty of mentions and sales of a 1982 version, but not one thing about the 1985 version. Here are a few pictures. I understand that condition plays a big part. This coin was purchased new in the 80s and never taken out of the holder, so it is in the best condition it could possibly be in. The marks seen are on the plastic and the scanner. Any ideas? Thanks,

[

The only auction record I could find was for a regular (non-proof) piece and it sold for $6,000. However, the reported mintage for this year is 2 proof pieces and a single unique regular piece. The auction record mentioned "less than a handful know" to exist. Based on this there is a high probability the coin is not legit. I would never risk selling something like this uncertified. You don't want problems over this sort of high value item. On the flip side, many potential buyers would feel the same and not want to take the risk. So, in the event the coin is genuine you have a high chance of it selling much lower than it's worth.

Hello thank you for the reply. I'm fairly certain it is authentic as it was purchased direct from a catalog around the time it was released. I specifically remember this coin as my aunt bought it for my cousin who had hounded her for weeks to buy it for her. I don't remember the price she paid but it was higher than the normal coins my aunt would buy ( usually just regular silver dollars and silver in general to my knowledge this was the only gold coin she ever bought). I think I will send it in to have it authenticated like you suggested. It sounds like it may be worth it. Thanks

The Schön catalog (German; mine is the 2014 issue) says that the mintage of that denomination in that year was 45 pieces in BU, and 31 pieces in proof. Price according to that catalog is €2,500 - that would be about $3,400. So yes, the suggestion to get this authenticated is a good one ...
