Hello all;
In my introduction I posted I was going to try to put together a date set. I've been buying in the last couple of weeks and am getting there. I have 16 years thus far leaving me only needing12 more. Yay, I'm over half way there. 7 of the 16 I have are uncirculated and the rest are mostly fine or extra fine, only one really that would be called good. I'm stoked! Of course it will be short lived as I will probably start on then going for date and mint set. This is an addiction. I will try to post pics after but they are all just common dated so far .

You might get a little sticker shock when you are going for the 93 & 95. Those are the only 2 that I am missing from my 1778-1978 large dollar date set.

Trust me, you will not stop at a date set. All I lack is the 1893-S from a complete set of 1878-1904. This addiction does get worse.

However, I can't stand 1921's and refuse to put them in a collection. The real Morgan ended in 1904 and it's hubs were destroyed in 1910. The 1921 is a cheap knockoff done by John Sinnock at the behest of Chief Engraver Morgan.

I do know one addiction that is far worse than Morgans. Once the Bust Half Fever gets you, you're a goner...lol.

I am a Bust Half Nut now.

Which 93 & 95? The 1893 Philadelphia Mint is not too terribly expensive unless you want AU or better. The 1893-S is the real set stopper and not too far behind it is the 1889-CC and 1894. The 1895 Philadelphia proof does not belong in a Morgan dollar circulation strike set so the 1895-O is the one to get being most affordable in grades under AU.

The U. S. Mint did not strike a large dollar before 1795.

If you could find a coin show in your area, you might find what you need and for a decent price.

Picked up a 1878/7 from a pick box yesterday. and went to my favorite dealer today and got 1904s, 1902o ms63' 1881s ms62 and 1897 ms 63. Just need 5 more dates not counting the 1895 of course. I'll try to post pic tonight, at work now.

Best of luck, Randy! I've been trying to get a Morgan for each date, and am now missing only 1895. When I get that I may start on mintmarks. I'm inclined to agree with DoubleEagle about the 1921 Morgan, but I've actually got a full set of these, partly because I was given a 1921S ages ago, and the others were so cheap and it was the only way I could get a D mintmark Morgan.

I saw an 1895 Morgan in nice VF but with the mintmark very crudely filed off! It was $150 - I didn't buy it!

Some of those have very nice toning!

Maybe you could organize it in some way like an album or such. Makes for a better display. Although that might be hard with the slabbed coins. If you like it this way, that's fine too. To each their own.
