I just added this ebay listing to my watch list. Some collectors enjoy putting together a set of the lowest possible condition coins. I thought that those of you who do might enjoy taking a look. cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=390571014717&ssPageName=ADME:B:SS:US:1123

I'm going to look up some pics of PO-1's and FR-2's, but this looks like a seriously strange wear pattern to be natural. No stars left, but the denticles are still there?

Well, I was just minding my business, looking for low-grade bust dollars for comparison, and lookee what I found! http://coins.ha.com/c/item.zx?saleN...3&lotNo=7895I thought there was more than wear going on here! But what do you think ANACS meant by "acid treated?"

Gee, looks like the same coin to me. Oh my, do such things occur? Let's see, the coin sold for $246.75 [ including buyer's premium ] on March 24, 2013 to a live bidder on HA.com. The coin on ebay is in Manchester, NH and first showed up today, April 5th. (I track new appearances of the 1799.)

Nice catch philadelphian. The coin seemed alright in the photos but looking at the pictures in the ANACS holder I can see why they details graded it. If one looks at the obverse in particular, the surfaces is lightly granular in appearance and sort of looks similar to the shipwreck effect.

Been giving it some thought. Say you had a VF 1799 dollar with some ugly graffiti. Genuine coin, but no one wants to buy it. Ironically, if it was PO-1, there would be lowball collectors lining up to take it off your hands. You could carry it as a pocket piece for a century or so, and maybe the scratches would wear off. Or, alternatively, you could drop it in a vat of that stuff that Jack Nicholson fell into in the first Batman movie, and see what happens...

You can still read the date. The surfaces appear grainy. I'd be at FR2 but barely.

Definitely the same coin from HA. First time I've heard of a silver coin being "acid treated".
