Well worn, but very similar in appearance to a French denier of Charles the Bald (840-875). Not too far apart in diameter and weight.See this link: http://finds.org.uk/database/images/zoom/id/414417The experts might not agree but, at least, it is a starting place! |

man, I don't know what that is...i think aiglet is close. it sure has a strange shape, squarish, but rounded edges. I'm not a medieval coin expert at all (or an anything expert for that matter).

Can't read enough of the legend to make an educated comment.
Might be a coin, but by the shape could be a seal or bale mark as well. Quite a few of those used ancient/medieval motives.
Have myself a lead seal/bale mark from Nimes, where one side has the ancient crocodile reverse on it.

My guess is a denaro from either Sicily, Messina or Brindisi. There were many types struck under Manfred, Carlo of Anjou, and Conrad I and II in the 1200s-1300s. The cross is similar to a couple of those and the weight is also comparable.
