Its a shame about the scratch on the eagle's beak, but the obverse die crack is quite interesting.

1658 Commonwealth crown. There may have been only one set of dies for this issue and based on the surviving examples, the die must have cracked early in its use as most show this crack through the portrait of Oliver Cromwell and across the entire bottom of the coin.

That's a nice coin jgenn.

I wonder how you speculate that there were only one set of dies. Are there records about dies that still exist since the 1650's? If so, that's amazing that information is available.

I could have been more clear. Since most examples that I have seen show the die crack, it seems likely that there was just one die.

This reference mentions that:

Quote:
...the objects identified as Simon's Cromwell crown matrices are actually dies, the very dies that struck the original Cromwell crown pieces attributed to Simon.

and

Quote:
The obverse 'matrix' carries the identical pronounced die break present in some stage of its development on all surviving coins of the issue attributed to Simon.

So it sounds like the actual dies are in The Royal Mint Museum.
