Still trying to learn the difference in mint vs pm damage. Any help is much apprieciated. Have a great 4th!

Well the dime wasn't struck that way. You can see that "liberty" goes under the fold of material so this would have to be PMD.

BTW...you are in the canadian error forum. The mods may have to move this post to the appropriate US forum

Here's my input...

Well, let's think through what could happen. Could all that crazy machinery at the mint create that damage? Probably. What would happen afterwards? That coin found its way into a roll... could happen. Looking at the wear on it, it's been spent and used since the late 90's until someone said, "hey! this dime is messed up!"... less likely.

Another option: that coin has been working for over 15 years now, gaining the wear we see on it, when it got into a bad scrape. Drug across concrete, got run over, something. Then, you came across it!

The strike under the defect appears complete (LIBERTY is fully struck), so whatever happened occurred after the coin left the die machine.

It left the mint in tact. Damaged rim of your coin screams damage. Nothing in the striking process would disturb the edge of the coin. Damage also extends above the surface of the coin. Another sign of damage.
