Lucky Cuss - the shape of the portrait looks rather like George I but the flans look wrong - George I halfpennies were struck on smallish flans (25-27mm) and had quite distinctive rims that should still be discernible even when worn. I wonder if these are contemporary forgeries of the 1770-5 issue of George III halfpennies.

A recurring theme in this thread, British coppers circulated to such an extreme degree that they're rendered nearly unrecognizable.
Very nice!

the portrait might look like George I, but the rim is way off.

The right one could also be William III (this type, for example).

The info I'm working from (quoted from Wikipedia):

"For the 1719-1724 [George I] issue, the size of the coin was increased to 26-29 millimetres, though with the same weight of metal as before."

With regards to the William III halfpennies:

"Just before the queen's death from smallpox in 1694 a copper halfpenny, weighing 9.1-11.7 grams with 28-31 millimetres diameter was reintroduced...The [later] coins were copper, weighing 8.9 to 11.5 grams, with a diameter of 28-29 millimetres."

So at 28 mm in diameter for my specimen on the right, I concede William III could be a possibility.

Yes, William III is a possibility. I still don't think they are George I coins as they lack the wide rim, and I'd have expected that to be visible even on a worn example.

Maybe we loved them to death? Victorian bun pennies like these could still be pulled from circulation in the first two weeks of February 1971!

I'm actually working (if not very actively, those days) on a date set of this Victorian penny type (1860-1894) in similar condition.
As far as I can tell, I'm down to only 5 or 6 missing dates at this point (1869, 1878, 1883, 1888, 1892, 1893 - might have one of the last two). IIRC, those dates are mostly uncommon to scarce (especially 1869), which explains why I hadn't encountered them yet.
Some of the examples for dates I do have aren't quite that worn either, admittedly.

I would have extended this set past 1894 into the next few types, but, unfortunately, post-1894 pennies just don't show up so worn quite as often, so I'm still missing more dates than I have.
Also, after some point (around 1920, I think?) the date areas apparently weren't made quite as recessed, so by the time the coin wore down to PO-1, the date just wasn't readable any more (I do have one or two of those dateless examples).

I'll have to find the darn things first - hadn't thought much about that set for a good few months!

Anyway, I'll try to see what I can do. Smartphone flash photography just isn't very good for taking pictures of very worn coins (especially when they're also quite dark).

I'm not sure this one gets all the way down to true lowball status, but it's nevertheless rather well and honestly worn.
