The Goal: 25,000 Rolls Of Nickels (All Searchers Welcome!)

good luck on getting the 39D and 50D. I hit my 39D when I was least expecting it, infact I never knew it was a key date till I put it in my whitman folder. Granted I have lots of holes to fill since I live in Canada but the thrill of the hunt is always exciting.

No major pre 60's finds (5 boxes). However the latest 2 finds (both being on the obverse) are a 1983 P Cud (from 5 to 6 O clock) and the best is an off center 1986 P (AU).

The 86 P looks to have 2 strikes from the 12 to 6 o clock position and from the 6 to 12 position with about 1/6 of the lettering chopped off. The effect is more pronounced from the 8 to 10 O clock (od we tr in "god we trust"). I know I am saying it wrong but that's the best way I can explain it. I am surprised no one took this out of circulation.

Gothic / Afc, I have been following ebay auctions and the only ones that seem to attract bidding interest are lots with wars / buffs and key date Jefferson's. I also talked to the the local coin shop sometime ago and he said just hang on to them as may be in my sons life time they may be worth something.

I've never actually purchased a full box .... my searches are $20 at a time (10 rolls) ..... and so the latest 10 rolls were fun indeed ...

11 total pre-1960 nickels with a full date 1923 Buffalo and a 1943-P War silver ..... along with a "REPBVVICLA ITALIANA" 100 Lire dated 1998.

Wonder if that Italian coin will pass as legal tender at the local spaghetti restaurant.

I commend to you the humble nickel ..... you never know what will show up.

There is no magic line at 1960 whereby nickels dated earlier become 'special' ..... and you are correct L1011 that the 1960+ have the same inherent value.

I suppose for me the reason for collecting pre-1960 nickels is a subjective one ...... the artist Pablo Picasso is quoted to have said "You have to draw the line somewhere".

There is nothing different in value, composition or whatever between a 1959 nickel and a 1960 or later nickel ...... but I choose to 'draw the line' at 1959.

It say it's all up to the individual preferences of the collector.

From a thrill of the chase perspective ..... I just enjoy finding the 50+ year old coins ......

That's what makes me happy ..... and I say that is what collecting is all about ...... satisfying your own goals in your own way.

Somebody else may choose.... for example ... 1968 as the 'line' ..... good for them for their own reasons.

Ceylon62 - that was pretty much what I was thinking. If I put these in a bag in my basement and come back to it in 40 years they may be worth something! Or, if we change the metal composition on nickels and go with plastic coated wood or something they'd be nice for my kids to have!

Found a 42P war the other night, was one of my holes needed in my book. 6 more to go.

Searched 10 CWR today and found 9 pre-59's including a 43 P war and a 50. Betterb than the last 3 boxes combined.
