I see a lot of comments on some having a hard time finding 2009 & 2010 nickels.....are these known to have very low mintages? I know there was talk of the '09 dimes and nickels being low but have not seen a mintage figure yet. I have found a few of each in my change and was wondering I I should bother keeping them or not. Heck, I've been throwing them in the kids' banks - maybe I shouldn't be doing that!

Being totally new to Nickel searching ,what are the key dates or known Doubles I should be looking for ? I just picked up $50.00 of CWR's from the bank and the first roll had a 1945 D . War time nickles are all silver ? Thanks for any help or web sites you can share with me to help me learn this new voyage I am about to embark on  Matt- Edited by Gutkowski

 to the nickel searching thread Gutkowski ...... be warned .... this can become addictive. Soooooo ...... here is a top-of-my-head primer for a new nickel roll searcher .... I keep all coins minted 1959 and prior ..... most are worth only face value ..... but I just can't throw back a 50+ year old coin. There are nine (9) circulation strike issues with annual mintage below 10 million ...... so I would for sure keep all of the following (in reducing mintage order) .... 1950, 1949-S, 1955, 1951-S, 1939-S, 1938-D, 1938-S, 1939-D and 1950-D War Nickels are 35% silver. There are 11 total coins in this mini-set ..... 1942 through 1945. Be aware that in 1942 there were 'normal" Cu/Ni alloy coins also minted in Philly and Denver. You want the ones with the enlarged mint mark on the reverse above Monticello dome. There are several double-die in the series. There is also the 1943/2-P overdate. Famous Henning counterfits are know to exist for 5 dates. Thank you for the info David  I went through the CRW's and found a few keepers 1939, 1940 x2 1942 1945 D 1946 1952 1953 D 1954 1954 D 1955 With some beautiful bronze toning I will post some photos 1955 D x2 1957 D 1958 D 1959 D x2 Alot of 60's Here is that 1955 the photos dont do it justice   |

Excellent! You are off to a great start already. Your 1955 is a lovely find ........ that coin was the last one needed by fellow CCF nickel-maniac DylansDad ...... and he looked a long time for it before recently completing the entire circulation strike set. You also found a 1945-D ..... another great find as the Denver mint War Nickels are very tough to come by. I assume the 1942 you list is Cu/Ni alloy ..... or is this a War Nickel as well? If so ..... it will have an enlarged P over the dome. Be aware that your 1939 is a potential double die coin ....... the hub doubling is on the reverse and shows up strikingly well in the devices below Monticello ...... take a good look with a 10x loupe at the "cello" of Monticello and the "Cents" ..... it will be obvious if you have one. I suggest a humble Whitman 9009 folder for you ...... Jefferson 1938 - 1961. I am having great fun trying to fill mine from bank rolls at 5 cents a coin. You already have a great start on yours. Finished box today and ready to dig into another for tonight / tomorrow. Todays finds were 30 pre '60 of which included 2 '39s. One was in spectacular condition and was a big upgrade. Still need 7 holes filled.

Hey guys, I finished up all my finals last thursday and my first track meet of the season friday and saturday, so now it's winter break for me and that means more free time to roll search! I've gone through 3 boxes of nickels over the past 3 days and I thought I would share my finds. 6,000 nickels searched 3 War Nickels: 1943P, 1945P, 1945S 5 Buffalo nickels (all full date): 1925, 1926D, 1930, 1936D, 1937 1 proof nickel: 1983S 1 1951S, and (I'm just learning grading) what looks to me a BU 1939 -and- 6 Canadian nickels A good start to the break! In addition to finding the 1926D, my grandpa recently gave me a '26D and the Red Book says they are worth more than a common date so that is pretty cool. |

Just searched a box. Found 22 pre 1960's. (2) 1939 and an even mix of 40's and 50's
