They usually don't, they deal mostly in higher value coins. |

I've been a fan of nickel roll hunting for quite some time. Over 50 boxes searched, but today's was the best by far (38D & 39D in same box). First 2009P found (after 50, yes 50 boxes)! Here are the results: 1938D 1939 X2 1939D 1940 1940D 1941 X3 1941D 1941S 1943S War Nickel1946D X2 1949 1951 1951D (in MS60+) 1953 1953D 1954 1954D 1954S 1955D X2 1957D X5 1958D X4 1959D X3 (One of them is MS-60+) 2009P (first one ever) 2009D X3 |

I've been having a little trouble recently finding a box to search. I got one from a BoA yesterday, but looking through the holes I could see it was all 2011.
So today, I exchanged it for another box at my main bank and alas, when I searched through it, I found it was about 30% full of 2011!
In that box though, I did find one thing that turned my bad mood around: a 1941S Large S! there's really no mistaking this variety. It's only in F-12, but I'm still happy about it.

The 1941 has a large S? I thought only 1942 through 1945 did?

You see in 1941, two different "S" mintmark punches were used to punch the mintmark into the dies. One of them created a smaller S, and the other was slightly larger. The large one being the much more scarce than the small. Perhaps someone can help me out with some pictures? I can't take a high enough resolution picture of mine to demonstrate the difference. Oh I didn't realize that thanks. I have been through about $1560 of nickels and have separated all prior 1960 and kept out all the subsequent years good shape coins and rewrapped to hold on to the others due to the intrinsic metal value. I have found 18 War Nickels and 18 Buffalo along with many other foreign coins including a 1929 canadian. I haven't found a buffalo in a while. I have to go through all my cups of coins to see exactly what I have to fill up the 4 collector books I bought. My original intent on nickels was just to get a few hundred dollars (just in case,I was around as a young child for the silver era!) |

Is the '41s large S really that rare? I just went through mine, and 3 of my 12 '41s nickels are the large S variety.
I will post pictures later; I am using my phone right now.

Box #32 down-  silver-1943P the ugliest one I've ever pulled (but silver isn't really ugly) 32/29, 29 silver no buffs no V's no proofs cool dates: 1958 Black beauty 1958 1941-S 1940-D 1942 CuNi British penny from 1985 3 canadians 1949-S On a side note- I remember someone saying a while back that Shield nickels cant be found in rolls because they made them too small. Well the diameter of the british penny I found today is smaller than a nickels diameter, and I have also found US pennies in nickel rolls before. I think its just a matter of time before one of us pulls a Shield nickel. What say you? Edited by rachums107

I wasn't going to search coins till next week but I just picked up a box of nickels to keep up with you rachums  Box #32: no silver, no buffalos, no hole fillers, no key dates 1938 1939 1940 (x4) 1940 d 1941 (x3) 1947 1947 s 1948 d 1949 1951 d 1952 1952 d 1952 s 1953 d 1954 d (x3) 1954 s 1958 d (x2) 2009 d (x4) Other: 1983 canada 1945 Wheat centAnd I also got 18 high AU or BU 60's and 70's nickels. They are all so lusterous. It was weird finding so many. I also have not had a War Nickel in the last 6 boxes. And no buffalos in the last 10 boxes. Where have they all gone? Edited by murrellington

sorted some more from that dealer, got 3 1938Ds and a 1938 S
2 of the 1938 Ds are MS.
