jbuck Moderator United States 194145 Posts	Posted 01/04/2016 11:54 am The S mint mark is what is different. The first 1979-S mint mark (variety 1) looks more like a blob. The second 1979-S mint mark (variety 2) looks more like an S. The 1979-S variety 2 mint mark is the same as the 1981-S variety 1 mint mark. The 1981-S variety 2 mint mark is even clearer.
