Not too long ago I purchased a 1867 nickel Three Cent piece from a seller on ebay. It was pictured in AU condition with good luster and offered at $25 because the seller said it had scratches. They weren't scratches at all but rather a prominent die clash event on both obverse and reverse. So I was happy when it arrived and valued at about $72 in AU 58 with a really nice clash. |

For all the negativity that gets heaped onto ebay, good outcomes can be realized. A few years back I picked up a tattered, poor condition Whitman Wheat cent folder (1909-1940) containing something like 65 coins for around $20. Just average, circulated coins--including mid-range VF examples of a '22 D, '24 D, and '26 S--and a low XF 33 D. |

This happened outside of ebay, at another online auction. Looking through the seller's auction lots, I was thinking what else to add to my shopping cart, and came across inexpensive coins of South Korea in 1 won of 1966 and 1967, I bought them (no one wanted to bet on them). At first I wrote them down in my notebook as 1967 coins (2 pieces), and only when I received the mail, I discovered that they were 66 and 67 years old coins. I would have considered them cheap coins worth no more than $1, if not for ebay, which told me: "Hey, coins in South Korea can be expensive, study yours," it turned out that 1 won 1966 at UNC costs about $ 150, I sold mine. Thus, having invested only 10 cents, I made a profit of $ 140 (net profit). Edited by Slerk

I've got a civil war storecard collection from the town I live in and that lead me to my best score. I found a nice one for 59 dollars and sent it off to get graded and it came back MS65.

I've bought tons of stuff on ebay, and am always amazed how everything gets bid right up about where it should be. This attests to my own ignorance of foreigns, ancients, varieties, all that, but in for regular US stuff I've never seen much of a bargain, just too many eyeballs. |
