As far as using the acetone, how long do you keep it in the solution? Acetone as in "finger nail polish remover"? Also, I always heard you aren't supposed to clean coins.

No, never clean coins. You can conserve them though. Acetone is a part of nail polish remover but for coins, you want 100% pure acetone, no additives. You could leave it for up to a day, check in and put it back if no improvement.

Any Beauty Supply or cosmetic store should have it. I get mine from Claires, but I doubt its at lowes or HD

That is indeed a WAM reverse - congratulations on the nice find. I'm going to politely push back on the acetone bath suggestion. An acetone bath is effective to remove organic materials - which I do not see on your red/brown cent. Me - I would place it as is into a 2x2 and call it a good find and move on. Me - I would place it as is into a 2x2 and call it a good find and move on I'd beg to differ. It can help delay the onset of zinc rot. That spot on the reverse could develop otherwise. |
