I've owned a lot of 1891 large cents but this is the only one I've found with the large die break on the obverse legend. Being a die break, it has to be progressive and there must be lots of other examples out there. What do forum viewers know about this coin? Any comments are appreciated!

Nice die break. I don't know anything about the coin, but I think that die breaks add character to the coin.

Thanks for the responses! Thanks for the pics, Don! It is a great date and the die cracks just add to the magic! Rob Turner probably has a better example of this particular coin but it's the only one I've seen.

I have examples of that one, but not with such advanced die cracks. Nice coin.

Bosox, thanks for the comment! It is intriguing for the severity of the die crack. I keep looking for similar coins but so far haven't found any.

Thought I might have one with that crack, checked mine and I came up with the same cracks as Fourmack's, with the crack at the R of GRATIA much heavier. Small die crack A of REGINA to the rim. Also has die clash marks from beads, above and below the queen. Both Tamarin and Fourmack's coins are portrait #2.

On the die that minted Tamarin's coin, the die chip between the A and N formed before the die cracks, so it is an easy way to ID this die in early die states. It is actually one of the more common obverse 2 dies used in 1891.

The other two coins were minted by a different obverse die.
