Spanish Countermarked Coin? - Coin Community Forum

The date 1641 looks countermarked but the 8 in a circle almost looks countermarked over that. Anyone ever see anything like this or know where this is from? Report this Post to the Staff

Just spitballing, but perhaps this coin was remonetized one at 8 Maravedis and then later re-remonetized at 3 Maravedis? txabs Valued Member Spain 125 Posts	Posted 08/11/2019 04:42 am This is a maravedis coin counterstriked on c XVII, under Felipe IV as Spence sugested. Base coin is Felipe III or Felipe IV hammered 8 maravedis, from 1602 to 1626. First countermark is Madrid (MD) 1641 restrike to VIII maravedis, not III, this restrike is partially hidden by the next one. And yes, they countermarked 8 maravedis coins with 8 maravedis restrikes, don't ask xD Then, again a 8 maravedis restrike in 1652, can't see the mintmark, ¿maybe Coruña? Coruña mintmark is a scallop (clam). BTW, you are watching one of the sides upside down, sorry for the bad quality, but this is how you read this spanish restrikes and countermarks Regards!
