Like Numis Rob said about 1972, 1968 was a fairly non descript year for New Zealand, after the 200 million coins issued in 1967 for decimal currency, none were issued for circulation in 1968 2c, 10c and 50c Proofs - smudgy photo, coins are bright in real life. Just a set of 1c - 50c collectors coins were issued, 75k sets were issued and incredibly 40k were polished specimen pieces like these (usually living in a plush case) and only 35k were the standard unicrculated finish. No special dollar coin was issued in 1968, as the 1967 had been meant as a one off - fortunately in 1969 they did issue one and decided to make it a yearly visitor, with the coat of arms being the Obverse in years without a significant anniversary.

Just a couple more for 1968 A Dutch guilder in Stainless steel (Started 1967) which left the planchet shiny no matter how much wear was on the coin. This one is barely VF but shines on! The other coin is a Irish sixpence (Also known as a reul) and this is surprising as the UK issued no predecimal coins in 1968, but did issue 5p and 10p coins which served as shillings and florins. Ireland on the other hand issued Pennies to Florins in 1968 and even a sixpence in 1969 (The same year the first decimal 5p and 10p coins!). Of course the 6d here is barely circulated. Ironically both Fiji and Jamaica which became decimal in 1969 issued predecimal coins in 1968 too.

Nice set Meanwhile 1967 was a huge year in New Zealand. On July 10 we switched officially to decimal currency and some 200 million coins arrived in the country for the changeover which was smooth. The new dollar was based on 10 old shillings and $2 = £1 - as you have seen my gorgeous Kiwi coins ad nauseaum (Call it patriotism and pride), I will spare you and just show 2. The tiny 1 cent coin was the smallest weighing just 2 grams and 17.6mm in size (Smaller than a dime). Showing a fern and actualy worth more than the penny. The special dollar coin was the largest and 400k were issued as collectors pieces only. They are surprisingly common and I have here 2 coins of each (I have about 10 sets including 3 polished ones - these are standard uncirculated set coins). The dollar has borrowed the Half crown motifs (You will see th first of my fabulous halfcrowns in 1965) and some added fernery to fill out this huge crown sized piece. Close up of the rims on the coins - Decimal Currency July 10 1967. We now wave goodbye to these coins and head back into the Predecimal era.
