I don't know why these were made, but I have seen quite a few of them. Usually they are gold colored on base metal. Have a close look under a glass to see if you can find any trace of gold coloring.

@moose59, I believe that this is a Mexican Wedding Token. As mentioned by @alganbagerap, some are colored gold, while others are silver. Use the CCF search function to find other thread on this topic, but here is one to get you started:
