ASE / Presidential pieces have higher silver content. Mintage limits? Production costs? Is the Mint allowed to set prices by supply & demand? Is there any minting authority that specifies the price? hfjacinto Pillar of the Community United States 7355 Posts	Posted 08/11/2021 9:31 pm I really think that the price of these was set to not be too expensive and depress sales but not too cheap to not make them feel premium. I was hoping for $65-$75 but $85 wasn't really bad. I'm pretty certain that someone in the marketing department priced these. As to the 2nd part of the question, these are more limited than the ASE and have a higher desirability than the US President medals. As to the mintage they were based on the number of planchet the mint was able to acquire. The mint can set the price for numismatic items as long as there is no loose to produce these. Pricing is actually an art based on demand. Like I said someone in marketing probably looked at the demand, the probability of 100% of the mintage being sold and the cost of the other products and decided on $85. If they were to buy a website that actually worked perfectly for everyone they would have to charge $25,000. Each. Wall Street firms spend tens of $$millions for systems that can handle 375,000 transactions per 15 minutes. And they pay for them by using them 24/7/365, not just 5 times a year, 15 minutes each time like the Mint has to. And that's why we can't have nice things.
