1909-S Philippine 10 Centavos (San Francisco Mint)

This one minted at the US Mint in San Francisco, just like the 1909-S VDB penny. The mintage on the 10 centavos coin is 450,000, a bit less than the King of Lincolns. Various estimates of the surviving population of the 1909-S VDB range from about 50,000 to a couple of hundred thousand.
Now, for the 10 centavos coin I'd say the figure would be much lower, maybe even as low as a couple of tens of thousands, or even less. Why? While the S VDB was hoarded and saved right from the beginning, the Philippine coin likely wasn't. And then there is the fact that the Philippines went through a war and an occupation, and in such circumstances collectibles are a low priority, especially items that may not even be recognized as collectible.

This one has several dings, but the detail is F/VF in my estimation. Got it for $5 on ebay. A 1909-S VDB in similar condition, even with corresponding damage would probably go for several hundred. All right, there's more demand for a US coin. But the 10 centavo coin is also a US coin, in a very real sense, since at the time of mintage the Philippines were a US territory and it was minted at the SF mint.
