1958 Lincoln Penny Date Error - Coin Community Forum

ijn1944 Bedrock of the Community United States 19288 Posts	Posted 11/23/2020 4:41 pm That blob in the 9 is known as a die chip--in this case a broken post or filled 9. The part of the die that forms the 'interior' of the 9 breaks off, causing the void to be filled when the coin is struck. Nice example, but really doesn't add value to the Wheat cent. Not uncommon with '50s cents. A collector who is crazy in love with broken posts might pay upwards of 15-25 cents for the coin. Report this Post to the Staff
coop Bedrock of the Community United States 62064 Posts	Posted 11/23/2020 4:55 pm No, this is a die chip issue. The difference? A post is on a incuse center device. The (9&6) on Lincoln cents are not closed. They are open. Thus when that area breaks out, it is a chip issue and not a broken post issue on those digits. Report this Post to the Staff
