Just for fun I decided to look an old Red Book from 2000 and see the prices on some key coins.

In G-4

1916 D Mercury dime - $460
1877 Indian Head cent - $425
1909 S VDB Lincoln Cent - $350
1922 No D Lincoln Cent - $120
1916 Standing Liberty quarter - $1,200

1 0unce American Eagle - $325
1 Ounce Platinum Eagle - $350

After about 10 minutes, I had to put the book down. I couldn't bear to look at anymore prices.

I often wish the same thing. I like to use the older Red books to see the trend of certain coins.

If I only had a delorean with a flux compositor :)

I'm more shoked by the 1916 Standing Liberty quarter.

Whereas the 16-D and the 09-S.V.D.B have gained several hundred dollars in G-4, the 1916 has gained several thousand dollars in G-4

And that was for G4! An AG3 is at the $800-900 level in 09!

I have the same backwards-looking thoughts when leafing through the old Yeoman books and the first edition of the Krause catalog, then I remember the wages I was earning back then. Hard to collect the beauties when all I had was pocket change to spend.

I think that the Twenty Cent Pieces went into orbit as well as better grade Liberty and Shield nickels in VF/XF or better grades.

You could get a delorean for around $25K... that flux compositor is going to be a little more expensive :) I am not sure where to get one of those.

If you ever get one, then don't waste your time getting coins..... bet on sports. You can double your money every 3-4 hours. Coins don't go up that much!

Just think. At a coin show today a dealer showed me a 1916D Mercury dime, slabbed by PCGS as AU-58 and he only wanted $8,000. HOWEVER, he did mention that price was negotiable.

That isn't a bad price on the 1916d. To bad I don't have $8k to spend on it.
