I remember the mid 1970s thru 1980s when a lot of the coins discussed here in this thread were in very large sales. They would be advertised in 2 full-page ads in Coin World and Numismatic News... like the bust half in platinum and the 1792 silver centered cent. Every week I couldn't wait to get my next Numismatic News to see what obscure numismatic treasures would be auctioned or on private sale lists.

Unique: https://www.numisbids.com/n.php?lot...lot&sid=2240And a bargain at only $20,000. I run across a fair number of European coins where fewer than 5 are known to exist. Supply-demand balance means none of them compare to the prices of U.S. coins with this type of rarity.

The gold medal version of the 1781 Libertas American Medals. Along with the Silver and Bronze versions, Ben Franklin had a few of these medals made in gold for the French monarchy. However, none have been found, and their exact location is unknown, if they still exist. Finding one of those medals would be the find of the decade for American numismatics. If 5 exist, but there are only 2 collectors, then there is little price pressure (in general). Of course that's an oversimplification, but you get the point.

I think the first unique coin I posted was Dutch. And yes, with a population one and a half orders of magnitude smaller than the U.S., we can expect demand for the coin to be much lower. Which raises the question of whether "rarity" is absolute (number of extant coins) or relative (in proportion to demand).

In my opinion the grade does not affect rarity, although it may affect value.

How about the 1804 silver dollar?

Certainly not as rare as coins that are unique...at least the way I look at the question.

Leaving the USA and entering the commonwealth. These two are pretty rare (And NOT mine!) Looks like a standard worn British Halfcrown - it was found after being in circulation unnoticed for several years sometime in the 1960s. Its unremarkable except for the 2 in the date. They apparently did not mint any halfcrowns for the UK in 1952 after mega mintings of the cupronickel coins since 1947 to 1951. It was believed up to 5 were minted as proofs and samples. None were meant to left the archives or museums, so how this coin got out is a mystery. Experts pronounced it genuine. Valuewise - 7 figures at least. Edward VIII Halfcrown pattern or essay - believed to be from experimental mintings in 1936 - these are quite rare (Less than 50 of each) and again very much prized. Spink lists them at between £40,000 and £200,000 each.
