For 1782 we visit Prussia, Frankfurt and Ireland. 1782 - Ireland - Halfpenny   1782 - Frankfurt - Heller (1/480 Thaler) The heller was originally a silver coin denomination valued at 1/2 pfenning (the name coming from the Austrian city of Hall am Kocher, therefore, Häller = Heller) but by the time this coin was minted in 1782 only the name remained. One would have needed 480 of these to make a Frankfurt thaler's worth; quite a heavy pocketful that would have been at 2g each (so just shy of a kilo.)   1782 A - Prussia - 3 Gröscher (1/8 Thaler) Nearly uncirculated. Some 205 million of these were struck in the 7 years from 1779-1785, a staggeringly high number considering the minting technology of the era. The poor planchet quality is a reflection of that. Nice additions, everyone! I'll just be lurking for most of the rest of this "How Far Back Can We Go?" edition, as my next contribution won't be until we get to 1700, and then it'll be another 85 years before my final one...  Edited by hokiefan_82

Another Russian 5 kopeks for 1780. This one is on the heavy side at 62.1g (51.2g is "normal" weight)  |

My Maria Theresa thaler hasn't got the same gorgeous toning as Dorado's, but it does have an impeccable pedigree, as my parents bought it from a bank in Salzburg as my 11th birthday present!   I also have a 1780 Dutch Duit:  |

Those Russian coppers are impressive, @bd251. They must have had big purses. Much smaller is this French liard, but its value was also lower in proportion. France 1780, liard, Paris (A). Copper, 3.06 g.  |
