Here is another common coin made in an uncommon mint, a copper solidus (boratynka) struck in Oliwa, now a suburb of Gdansk, and 100 miles north of where @spence's coin was struck. As best I can tell, the mint operated a year to make these coins, then closed.   |

Orange 1660, 1/12 ecu (luigino), William of Orange.  In 1660 William of Orange was just 10 years old. He made a remarkable career, ending up as king William III of England, Scotland and Ireland in 1689. The principality of Orange was entirely surrounded by France and the papal state Comtat Venaissin. Orange was one of the feudal states that did not have an agreement with France to mint luigini. That did not stop William from minting coins that were look-alikes of those of its mighty neighbor, even using the French coat of arms instead of that of Orange (which was a post horn). |
