Here is a quarter that I inherited from my grandfather. I have searched the web to find any coins with the same counter-stamp or any information on it. I have come up short. I realize this coin is basically a slider but I find it interesting. Can anyone tell me if they have ever seen this exact "YYY"counter-stamp before? Any ideas of it's value or could give me information on any good books on counter-stamped coins? Any info is appreciated. Thanks, Greg

Gregory Brunk is the author of several references for merchant marks and counterstamps. they are the gold standard for that subject. I havent been able to find my copies for some time, so I am unable to check if this one is listed. my guess is that most of the value of this coin will be tied to the value of the silver that it is made from.

@class, one of our members (exoguy) may be able to help when they see your post. I did a quick search of prior CCF threads for this maverick counterstamp, but didn't find another example having been posted here.

to the CCF, Classic Pontiac Your handle reminds me that my second car was a 1956 Pontiac Chief, a red & white convertible. Your c/s appears to be an unlisted and unsolvable maverick. Appearances suggest to me that it was likely stamped in the late 1800's when folks demonstrated a penchant for converting coins into personal mementos; this, like love tokens. The three Y's may have been someone's initials, perhaps? If a collector can solve the mystery of a piece, attaching history to it, therein lies the value, historical and financial. On the plus side, puzzle coins like yours are valued as conversation pieces, relics of bygone days. Consider that 1876 was a centennial year, too. The coin is silver and a super, low-ball piece, to boot. Perhaps, this coin could be the start of a counterstamp 7070 type set? P.S. - The Brunk books can now be researched online! Thanks for the info Exoguy. Unfortunately, the link you provided to the Brunks books online did not work for me. It gave me an error on Internet archive when clicking the link saying that "Item cannot be found" and "Items may be taken down for various reasons, including by decision of the uploader or due to a violation of our Terms of Use." I will search for the Brunks books online to see it I can find them. Out of the coins that I have inherited from my grandfather this one probably has me the most curious.

That's odd, it worked fine, earlier today and many weeks prior. I just got the same message that you did, Classic Pontiac. I just tried another "Brunk book" avenue, and it worked. Try this link .... https://archive.org/details/2006mer...view=theater Let's hope this one doesn't get railroaded!

Thanks again Exoguy that link worked. I'll see what I can find. I'm sure that I'm not as as old as some of the guys on this community, but I have a very faint memory of seeing this exact counter-stamp in a coinbook or possibly in the a RedBook as a kid. When I inherited this coin it sparked a memory in my head but I am pretty sure it is just my imagination. Possibly, my grandfather showed this to me as a kid when he showed his collection to me. Thanks, Greg

Hey Greg, the previous link to the Brunk material worked yesterday. There must have been a website glitch.
Using these links saves buying the costly book, if you can find one. Plus, there's the benefit of quickly searching names online. Enjoy!
