New Caledonia 5 Francs 1952. Reverse features the kagu bird, found only in the mountains of New Caledonia. They are listed as endangered on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. There are fewer than 1,000 mature individuals estimated in total today.

Same birdie as Hondo's on the 1949 50 centimes.

Excellent, triggersmob! It's a shame that these were minted in aluminum.

I actually don't mind aluminium. As it's soft, it strikes well. Wear, on the other hand, is a different question. Like this one. Not a birdie coin though Here's a new birdie that just landed on my desk. 2015 Cook Islands 20 cents - Fairy Tern

Beautiful coins, triggersmob! I really like the French coin - they used that same Marianne w/ ships obverse on quite a few of their Pacific colony coins. But back to birds, here's a 1981 Iceland 5 Aurar featuring Gammur the eagle, one of the four traditional protector spirits ("Landvættir") of Iceland (the others are Griðungur the bull, Dreki the dragon, and Bergrisi the giant). The reverse is a skate.

1982 Seychelles 25 Cent. The reverse features the Seychelles black parrot, fewer than 1000 of which survive in the wild.
