Hi all I was going through some of my late fathers coins on the weekend and found a 1944 penny that is smaller than a standard penny and was just wondering if anyone had any idea why it would be. It is 28.75mm across the middle and 28.45 from top to bottom. Cheers Bryan
Back in the 1960's in Australia smarties were grinding down pennies to the size of a florin for the poker machines and the later 20c machines. After saying that not sure with this one, very crude job.
Thank you for the information very much appreciated. I thought it had been clipped but wasn't really sure why. I can understand why people used to clip gold and silver coins but bronze isn't really a precious medal. However grinding them down and using them for poker machines makes sense but not sure my coin would have worked as Basil said it is a crude job and it's not round.
