Jefferson Nickel Rotation: What Is 0 Degrees On The Obverse?

Brandmeister Pillar of the Community United States 6656 Posts	Posted 05/24/2024 11:50 am I picked up NGC 3294260-005 on ebay because I was curious about the apparent rotation on the reverse. The coin is a Type 1 cupronickel 1942 Jefferson nickel. In hand, the reverse does definitely look slightly askew, but that now begs the question: what is the precise orientation of a Jefferson nickel obverse? Level is much easier to determine on coins with horizontal text. I am going to do some Internet research on the question, but Google isn't always a great tool for this kind of query. I put one in looking at what I think is the correct position, then look and see that the reverse side is tilted terribly.. I am thinking that the best way might be to take a normal nickel, put it into a flip, and then have a rubber band cross both sides. Monticello is easy to line up, at least. Just scanning over a couple dozen slabbed examples on Heritage, at least 90% have the reverse rotated significantly, usually counterclockwise. I've tended to line up the top end letters in TRUST and LIBERTY, but I don't know if that's correct. Report this Post to the Staff

The best way might be what @Brandmeister suggested—put several nickels in flips with Montecello exactly horizontal, and see what the obverse looks like. Report this Post to the Staff
