Not the expert on this, but my understanding is that all California Fractional gold actually has the denomination stated on the coin. I don't see any lettering on this coin, just the date on the reverse. This might be a token of some sort but damaged and probably only worth its weight assuming it is actually gold. Don't see this worth sending to a grading company.

Hopefully someone else might be able to help identify this. What's the weight of this coin?

One like this, including being holed, is in a custom NGC registry set. Here's a quick pic of what is shown:

After a few minutes searching online, I found a couple others things:

I saw this listing on ebay:
1882-California-Fractional-?-Gold

NGC has a picture of an 1881 version of this token which looks very much the same but for the date:

Interesting topic with some possibilities presented. I have no knowledge to contribute to the discussion, but look forward to hopefully learning if this is authentic or not.

Edit: I can indeed add one piece of support:

Absolutely! There is no way any TPG is going to deal with that clunky chain.

That said - if there is eventually any hope this is a genuine California gold token be very careful removing the chain to as cause no additional damage to the token.
