1988 $2 Planchet Flaw Or PMD? - Coin Community Forum

SallyG Valued Member Australia 383 Posts	Posted 09/15/2025 7:13 pm I found this interesting coin while noodling $2 coins yesterday. I think it might be a cool example of a flawed planchet but I am not sure. It weighs 6.4g ($2 coins are supposed to be 6.6g). Despite the damage, some of the letters and design features are still visible. I would expect that if this was PMD (from reaction with something like acid for e.g.) that the letters and details would have been removed too? The damaged areas are a pinkish orange rather than the normal gold color. What do others think? Report this Post to the Staff

The staining in and around the damaged areas is highly indicative of this.
