The planchet itself is not thinner, it is a function of how the collar die was set and the strike of the coin. Fully struck dollars will have an appearance of being thicker, because the rims and edges are square. 1968 to 1972 dollars are notoriously weakly struck, and it is hard to find a fully struck example even with the PL strikes.
