I have maybe 100 nickel dollars and, when I stack them, you can pick out those earlier dates easier just by the thickness. There should be no difference. Report this Post to the Staff

okiecoiner Pillar of the Community Canada 5585 Posts	Posted 10/30/2025 5:24 pm Well, these nickel dollars are all AU to UNC so no wear involved. If you stack 10 of them and have one earlier coin in the stack, you can easily see the difference looking at the stack from the side. So maybe the later years being thinner and higher make up the visual difference in thickness when viewed from the side. Report this Post to the Staff
SPP-Ottawa Moderator Canada 10456 Posts	Posted 11/16/2025 8:15 pm The planchet itself is not thinner, it is a function of how the collar die was set and the strike of the coin. Fully struck dollars will have an appearance of being thicker, because the rims and edges are square. 1968 to 1972 dollars are notoriously weakly struck, and it is hard to find a fully struck example even with the PL strikes.
