I just had two relatively expensive items from Heritage shipped from US to Canada, for which I was only charged HST and small Fedex fee.

However on a much lower priced item from the US, e-bay applied an automatic 25% "Import Fee". I will be holding off on any US items for now.

All of these items were bought in September.

Get stuff from overseas and US all the time.
Never use FedEx or third party importer , Always
Royal Mail , USPS or other Postal Service only.
Half the time the material comes straight through
no GST , especially from England .
Other times GST is collected . Since I am registered
for GST doesn't matter as we claim it back as a credit .
25 per cent import fee? Tariffs on coins to Canada?
Coins imported to Canada are not tariffed. If you use
7118 or 9705 they are FREE of duties, but subject to GST/ HST and sales tax if the Province has a separate
one.

I recently bought a lot of mixed certified coins of the British Empire (SA, CAN and UK) from the US via ebay and shipped with USPS (Ive bought from this seller several times in the past without any issues) and I got stuck with a $85 duty fees added on top of the good old $10 fees and applicable taxes (25% of duty). The package value was correctly declared and the package was described as numismatic material ; the package was privately insured so I guess they couldn't just put collector coins on the declaration). I assume the customs got confused and decided to apply a duty just to be sure since they filed it under HS 9825200000.1. I believe that legal tender coins REGARDLESS of the country of manufacture (even South Africa) are supposed to be Duty free... Its not a big deal since I fully expect to get my money back but its still quite annoying.

Im not the only one that I know of who got duty applied on legal-tender coins in the last few weeks, It wasnt an issue to me even back in July, it seems the customs are really pushing to find stuff to apply duty on so hopefully (or unfortunately) this subject might be helpfull to quite a few collectors around here in the coming weeks/months...

Edit : If the CBSA is almost systematically reviewing packages coming from the US, duties should be avoidable but the $10 fees they apply isn't, so perhaps something to take into account if you plan to buy a lower-value coin on ebay from the US...

Did CBSA set the tariff code or the sender? You may need to get the sender involved to reclassify the shipment. Had a similar issue a few years ago where the sender used the wrong code and I was subject to a duty, fedex said only the sender could edit. They did and problem went away.

If your doing the cbsa appeal/refund form, you may want the sender to draft a letter for you explaining that they are circulation coins, not "collector coins". You might be able to do it without, but it might be helpful to have just in case.
