1955 D Lincoln Wheat Error?

In the date... the 9 has lost some part. The 5 is all messed up. Looks like PMD, but the "part", ( lack of a better word) that is over the 5 looks nothing like a 5. Is it possible the the 5 was polished out and an attempt to put another number there? Any help would be appreciated and thank you.

I think it is just PMD. The metal has been moved around and it can make things look odd. But it is just damage. Keep looking!
