Picked up this coin on ebay. Before we even set about grading the coin, I want to ask about the slab. The ICG plastic is a generic "Genuine" Buffalo nickel. No numerical grade. Did they do this because it might be a details coin? Is there any value whatsoever in keeping this coin in this slab?

If the slab serves no purpose, I would be inclined to crack the nickel out for photographs, an acetone bath, and storage in a flip.

It keeps dust off of the coin.

Not sure about the reason for no numerical grade, but if it fills a hole, crack it out. If not, leave it be.

It must have been part of a bulk discount submission, as there is also no year.

That is a plausible guess.

I am not familiar enough with the company. I know PCGS has at least noted details, etc. on the "genuine" slabs I have seen.

For example, the 1869 that is now in my 7070.

That may be a sample slab issued by ICG for promotional purposes. If so, the slab may be valuable. I'd check with one of the slab generation experts on here before cracking it out. If the slab has value, VSS may be able to sticker the variety without cracking it out.

Who wrote the slab guides? Was that Conder101?

I went to ICG's verification page but it just repeated the information on the slab. Population report was meaningless.
