Tapped Into A Large Proof Collection Dump With Some Silver Coins (Including Two Walkers)

Yesterday I acquired three boxes of half dollars from my "go-to" bank. Initially I didn't think I would find much of interest because I found only one good "ender" (a proof coin). However, I found five more proof coins in that box plus three half dollars that contain 40% silver (including the fifth silver Bicentennial half dollar that I've found since I started CRH almost three years ago).

The second box was a doozy. It contained 19 proof half dollars, two coins that contain 40% silver, and a nice Walking Liberty half dollar. The third box also was very good -- it contained seven more proof coins, another Walker, a Franklin half dollar, and two more 40% silver Kennedy half dollars.

An unusual thing is that 90% of these near-pristine 32 proof coins were minted between 1983 and 1988 (including five NIFC 1987-S half dollars). It's odd that someone would have had so many duplicate proof coins in their collection. Perhaps Grandpa ordered several proof sets from the US Mint every year. Then one of his heirs disassembled the sets and cashed them -- plus his silver coin collection -- at their bank. In that case, many proof quarters, dimes, nickels, and pennies from the collection also are circulating.

Because I found proof and silver half dollars in all three boxes, I'm looking forward to buying three more boxes next week.
