In looking over some of the posts on the Proof Planchet Topic, DarthMorgan made this comment Quote " "The reverse exhibits an even, dirty tone, more like a haze that you often see on silver proof Ikes." This triggered the memory of a conversation between Herb Hicks, Rob Ezerman and myself a handful of years ago when Rob was All consumed, On Fire and neck deep into the study of these Proof Planchet General circulation Ikes. If memory serves, It was Herb Hicks that had sent a letter to the US Mint concerning the haze on the Proof Coins that develops in the Brown Ike holders that are exposed to nothing other than the plastic holder from the time they leave the US Mint. The haze that develops on proof coins is actually the remnants of a polishing compound that is used during the Planchet Preparation Process at the U.S. Mint. If it is not COMPLTELY removed during the rinsing process It will over time develop into a haze on the coin. Also the thicker the the polishing compound that is remaining on the coin the more of a Greenish color that will develop on the coin. It takes only a very very thin layer to develop the white haze that is not visible to Proof coin inspectors at the US Mint, as the compound drys and ages it develops into the white haze we see today. Just wanted to get this written down somewhere so that we do not loose this small bit of knowledge from some incredible numismatic researchers Herb Hicks and Rob Ezerman. I had almost completely forgotten this and it would have remained buried in an old thread on the Ike Group Forum. DarthMorgan Thank You for making that observation on your coin about the Proof Haze you were seeing but could not get to come out in photographs Stewart

Yes, Stewart. I made a post very early this morning regarding a possible LDS proof planchet Ike (71-D) on ebay, but I couldn't get the link to work using my phone. I'll post it on my home computer later this afternoon.

I will post photos when I have them in hand, but wanted to share the good news now because, IKES!. Yaaas! Can't wait to see them, buddy. However, are you SURE you can't show us the source link(s)? OK, Stewart. Here is the link I tried this morning. It has the same look as the example in the big Ike Variety book. The reverse appears more radiant. What are your thoughts? https://www.ebay.com/itm/1971-D-Unc....m1438.l2649Also, here is another NGC MS66, which also appears to have this glossy, star bright appearance, especially in the first two photos. Of course, it could just be an artifact of the lighting, but it looks familiar. The additional photos were taken in shadow, so it's impossible to tell from those. https://www.ebay.com/itm/1971-D-MS6...AOSwe7BWxMWjQuote: DarthMorgan Thank You for making that observation on your coin about the Proof Haze you were seeing but could not get to come out in photographs. You're welcome! And thank you for all the knowledge you've shared concerning these PP Ikes.

JBuck, Congratulations Dude, I cant Wait To See Them. Love Me Some Ikes LOL DarthMorgan, The First link Looks real close but as you know these things are difficult at best with photographs, the only concern I have with the first one is what seems to look like planchet chatter running up the left side of the coin from IGWT to and through the L in liberty, other than that it looks close. The second one looks very close after grabbing the image and doing what I could to clean it up, As you know these pictures an be misleading at times, but we make our best educated guess and follow our instincts sometimes we are dead on and sometimes we miss the target. Here is the shot of the second one cleaned up as best I could, And I am More Than Glad To Share Everything I Have Learned Over The Years Here On This Forum And From The Great Numismatic Minds I have Had The Great Honor To Share This Ike Adventure With Stewart

Quote: Here is the shot of the second one cleaned up as best I could. Well, I gotta say that it looks pretty clean to me, chatter-wise, but the only sure-fire way we'll know is to have it in hand. Perhaps one of our fellow Ike enthusiasts will be interested in it. I might would go for it, but there are a couple of high grade Ikes I've already got my eye on this week that will upgrade my registry set. I'm saving my cash for those.

BTW, Stewart, can you link me to the specific proof planchet Ike discussion on the Ike Group forum? I'd like to create a Word document containing all the information from both this thread and the Ike Group discussion. Thanks!

Quote: There goes Darth Morgan Triggering those memories again Glad I could be of service. Thanks for those links, stewart. I did find that 72-D thread between my last post and yours. Fascinating! I SO want to start hunting for a 1973 PP Ike too, but I can't get ahead of myself. First, I need to tackle the 72-D. Time to start searching the ol' bay. In the meantime, here's another suspect 71-D (NGC MS66) to review. The scratches appear to be on the holder. Whatcha think? https://www.ebay.com/itm/1971-D-MS6...AOSwmkpZ56k9

DarthMorgan, Yea that was a great day when I found that 72 D in the post.
The link you posted sure looks close, but again I am not sure what that is running up the left side of the coin just inside the rim, Looks like though if it is just lighting in the photo,
These Proof Planchet Ikes have been around for quite some time and have been researched by some of the top names in The Eisenhower World.

Guys, I just tallied all of my graded Ikes. The total comes to 134. I have never added them all up until just now. Geeez.... To quote "V" (for Vendetta): "How did this happen? Who's to blame? Well, certainly there are those more responsible than others, and they will be held accountable. But again, truth be told, if you're looking for the guilty, you need only look into a mirror." Here's the breakdown: PCGS: 118 NGC: 13 ANACS: 3 Hehe. Just thought I would share with you guys. Watch out, jbuck. You're starting down that road.....
