hehehe googoo. I edited that post. those were actually different boxes, I just wrote the wrong number. anyways, during one of those skunks, when I bought the box I got 2 40% half dollars from the teller tray :) so it evens out I guess.
and I picked up another box that I will do tonight. I'm determined to find another dime. and I got a box of nickels for fun in case the dimes are another skunk.

Here is a closer pic of the reverse of that 1900 Barber as requested. The suggestion that it could be solder from a pen was a good thought.

Box #51 was fortunately not my 5th skunk in a row.
1958 d 1961 d
1998 mexico 10 Cents
my wife helped and she found the 1961 d. We edge search and I think if I came across the 1961 d I wouldn't have seen it. It wasn't dark and it didn't really look silver. it really blended in. She's a great little helper.

great job breaking the skunk streak, but man oh man edge searching scares me I do it when I first dump the roll into my hand, but then I check each coin individually. Those dark edges have been silver for me many times I wonder if your other boxes were really skunks Nice finds though I am too affraid I will pass something by if I just edge search, plus I like a lot of other stuff besides just the silver

I see all of you talking about box searching. What all is in a box? All I have been doing so far is buying indevidual rolls of what I want to search at a time.

I'd love to find a Barber jdot. Nice find! Last 3 boxes 7 silver. And I'm still only 1/2 way through the third box.

googoo. We edge search but we check anything that looks strange or any dark coins. if we see anything that does not look normal then we check it. I really don't have the patience to look through dimes. I'm a cent/nickel guy.
firstcoin: You can get boxes of coins from the bank. All it is is a sealed box with 50 rolls of coins in it. You are roll searching but instead of getting several individual rolls, you can easily just get a box with 50 rolls.

boxes are how the banks receive coin in their deliveries pennies $25 nickels $100 dimes $250 quarters $500 half dollars $500
Some banks will order you coin if you ask nicely and you can sometimes get them to give you a box of whatever denomination you want Just a way to search more coins thus increasing your chances to find stuff and its also easier to have a full box rather then rolls when turning in change in my experience

Ahh, I figured it was something like that. Are the odds better of finding good keepers if the bank orders in boxes for you? I was curious, because the last bank I got indevidual rolls from I ended up with 5 out of 6 rolls of dimes new 2011 uncirculated. 1 roll stashed away for 40 years from now is fine, but 5 is too many!

It's random how much silver you find firstcoin. however, if you get a box, usually all of the rolls are mixed. occasionally you will get a box that is 50 rolls brand new. but I've only gotten that like 3-4 times out of about 55 boxes purchased.

How many of the banks keep boxes in stock? Is it better to have to order them?

firstcoin - It completely depends on the bank and also how friendly the tellers are towards rollhunters. Almost all banks will have boxes, but some Scrooge-like tellers don't want to give them out. All you get is a Bah Humbug when you ask for them!

I think I have an in with one of my local banks with the teller that handles their coins. It may be the beginning of a wonderful friendship!

Box #52: another skunk
My average is dropping fast with all of these skunks. 3 silver in last 8 boxes. Gonna start doing cents again for fun.
