Three solid rolls SD! That's amazing! Here I've searched over $50k in three years, not even a partial silver roll. My finds average the same boxed or hr.

Quote: So what is everyone having luck with? CWR or Boxes? Are these the rolls that tellers have in their tills? If so do you just ask for the rolls in front of them, or do you ask something else to get CWRs?

Splatto, if you are looking for customer-wrapped rolls, just ask the teller. I always request at least $100 worth or more, I like to pick up at least $500 worth (may take several banks) to make it worthwhile. If I know the vault teller, I will speak to her first. Rarely will I ask for an entire "fed" box of coin, unless they offer. I like to place an order for boxes in advance, so as not to short their supply.

again, these complete silver rolls are not by chance...well kinda, the teller saves them. she saves them because she knows I collect. and some people are just polite and nice

Thanks for the info so far. How should I approach such a request to my teller? If I tip them off that there are silver coins out there, I'm afraid they will keep them. any suggestions?

well, I tend to not say SILVER. I say, I am looking for OLD coins. and I give them the dates, usually, 1964 and earlier.. or with halves, 1970.. and coins with old looking wrappers. and if they ask why, just tell them you are a collector. be honest. I have had tellers try and get the S word out of me before. " so you look for the silver right?" response: 'oh really? silver? hmm.. well, I'm just interested in the older coins, pennies, nickles, the bufaloes" it helps to mention the other coins that are not silver because tellers only know about silver being valuable, and nothing valuable about wheat pennies, buffs, etc.. some small percentage might. but it definitely helps because they now think you are a legit collector. especially if you bring in a few examples in flips. like I did....
so next time give it a shot. and try not to mention silver.

Avoid the 's' word - of course! Thanks SDcoinguy. I brought in some coins to show my teller too, and many people felt it was a bad idea; they feared it could coax the teller to start searching herself. You might be interested in my Roll Hunters Code of Conduct post which has a little discussion on showing the teller things you have found. https://goccf.com/t/63371Thanks for your advice. I will definitely take on your advice. My tellers know I search for old coins, but I've never actually requested them to set them aside. -Matt

love the thread you posted.
in my case there was another issue with the tellers setting these coins aside for me. the general consensus said that the tellers were doing me a huge favor, 4+solid rolls of silver and then some, and the issue of bringing this teller appreciation in the forms of gifts was the debate/argument my wife and I were having. this particular teller is married and there is no flirting or under the table dealings going on. I ask her every time if this is a hassle and asks if this is a favor or going out of her way, and she says every time, its NO BIG DEAL..don't worry about it. I have even asked her if I can repay here in anyway, and she declines. I'm sure anyone would love a gift. but this teller honestly could care less about the coins she is saving me...i am sure in other cases the tellers know exactly what the coins are worth, so they KNOW they are doing us a huge favor by saving a roll of silver dimes that is worth 13x face, which then I understand the gift giving thing. this has been a strain on my marriage to say the least. and sometimes I have to say, its not worth it. my wife has her insecurities and I have have done things in my past to break that trust to where she thinks this transaction is suspicious and makes her uncomfortable. she tells me if it were a man or older woman, it would not be an issue. but she thinks that because this ONE teller, this young good looking teller is the only teller in the past 7 months to have saved me anything, seems suspicious to my wife. to me, its just luck. I ask every teller the same question regardless of race, sex, age, and if they happen to save me stuff, well its because I was polite and they are being nice back.. I refuse to believe it is because this one teller wants my bones. one other thing my wife says is that this type of transaction can lead to other "things", i.e. cheating, favors, etc...
in this situation the compromise came when my wife agreed to come in to the bank to see the transaction for herself. we have yet to do that, but I will let you know when it does. and if she feels uncomfortable with it, well, it was a good run. and I will just have to find another teller, this time a male one, to save me the goods. I might ask, do male tellers save you guys coins? or is it mainly women, young, old etc? this kind of information would be helpful. I told my wife, the majority of tellers are female, and young at that. my wife prefers that I go to male, or 65+ female tellers, which if they were that old, they would be retired anyway.
so we will just have to pray that my wife gets more secure, and that I can do more to show her I want her trust, etc. I don't want to bash my wife, I love her with all my hear and so much more than coins. bottom line, is it going to be your marriage or the coins... I know for some of us here, that is tough. but when we take a deep breath and realize that when we have lived our lives and we are about to die, we can look back and know that we loved our wives over anything else. and if your like me and believe that when we do die, our marriage her on earth will be united in heaven with Christ, not our coins..sorry for the rant guys. I appreciate every one's input.

almost gave away a '56 dime to a customer at my work I saw the dime was old and figured it to be a 65 or something I tossed it back and gave him a different one he said "what is that your lucky dime" I said it looks old maybe it's silver he asked me the year so I opened my drawer and pulled it out. I smiled and said yup its a '56 then I got a '45 War Nickel in my roll of nickels at work

$40 in rolls that I got from work: Silver? NADA! I was able to fill 2 more holes in the folder and do a few upgrades and am now only missing 3 dimes to complete the '65 - '04 set. The 73D, 75D, and 79 seem to always elude me!

slash112 I'm 20 as well. theres one bank branch around here that has like all really cute girls working there. its always a good day in there.
but I have bad news to report. I've done about 450 in dimes. strapped and cwr's but no silver. think I might stay away from these for a while. I can sort a box of halves in about 15 minutes but dimes seem to take like twice as long. I'm looking at all the tiny little edges and its awful. will just stick to pennies in the half dollar off time.
