Hi All, I'm new to the coin collecting hobby, but have jumped in with both feet. Could you help me get a ballpark grade for the 1887P Morgan I'm posting? It's a PL to me, but I know how that goes. I recently got it on ebay for a very reasonable cost and would like to confirm, if possible, that I made a great purchase. Looking forward to being an active member here. Looks to be in great shape.MS63-64. I see some hits but no noticeable wear.

That's a good MS-64, RedBook price $60.00. Might be worth sending to a grading service, like PCGS, or NGC. |

WELCOME!! According to The Official A.N.A. Grading Standards For United States coins, It's a Mint State-60 coin at best. There are to many bagmarks to call it a Mint State-63 much less a Mint State-65. - coincrazed |

Just a personal note: There is No Santa Claus in Numismatics. That said-grading Morgan dollars starts with the Cheek: any broken luster will automatically put it in the Almost Uncirculated grading spectrum, no matter what marks it has or doesn't have. It looks like it has tell-tale clues of being "rouged", which to the untrained eye will make it appear to be 'Proof-Like'. You'd need to post pics from several angles for anyone to form a proper opinion. |

ps: scans (and I've done thousands of them) are useless for determining a BU grade, as the scan breaks-down the color scheme and reorganizes it as it sees fit-which is usually not what you'd think it's be. Try scanning BU Gold coins to see this effect-the luster becomes totally different in the scan than it is in the hand.

Here's a belated additional shot of the coin. It has not been polished and really does have a great depth of reflection. I'm not very adept at depicting that, but this shot may give a little insight (so to speak).. I get at least 4 inches of ruler reflected clearly reflected.  |

Welcome to the boards! I'm not sure whether or not it is the photo, but it looks polished to me. There should be a lot of luster on liberty's face at that grade level, and it looks rubbed clean. If it is just the photo and the coin is problem free, then I would agree with 63-64.
