This has been driving me nuts for more than a week, and the Forum is cheaper and has better experts than found in the field of psychiatry. There seems to be two conflicting camps, each entrenched and insistent, surrounding the minting dates of the Buck Island (BVI) Half a Buck coins.
The Unusual World Coins Catalog shows two issues of the Half a Buck coins, one in bronze and the other in goldine, both with no date, and both minted in 1958. One of the two One Buck coins also has no date and is listed in as being minted in 1958; the other is listed as being minted in 1961 and has the year on the obverse straddling the buck head.
Others insist that one of the Half a Buck coins, rather than both, was minted in 1961 (even though it does not sport a date), and is listed as 1961 in the Latin American Tokens catalog by Rulau. I don't have access to this catalog.
Is the Krause publication mistaken or the Rulau publication? If Krause is mistaken, and at least one of the Half a Buck coins was minted in 1961, how can I tell the difference between that one and the one minted in 1958. There is no date on either coin, and I see no other differences. The fact that I see no other differences is not necessarily reliable. I'm confident someone here will be able to note the differences.
I ask for you help in resolving this conflict between major publications and the two camps that are devoted to each. Thanks in advance.

Is there no one who can settle this conflict? Were both Half a Buck coins minted in 1958, as per the Unusual World Coins catalog, or was one minted in 1958 and the other in 1961, as per the Rulau Latin American Tokens catalog, even though both are undated? Thanks again, in advance.

My old (1992) edition of UWC actially lists three types of half-buck: KMX Tn1, ND (1958) bronze KMX Tn2, ND (1958) goldine KMX Tn3, 1961 goldine According to Numismaster, Krause has now de-listed KMX Tn3, the 1961 dated half-buck; apparently they now agree that it doesn't exist. I suspect Krause/Bruce obtained a report that goldine half-buck coins had been struck in 1961; perhaps they assumed these half-buck coins were actually dated "1961" like the one bucks, and then had trouble reconciling this with goldine coins appearing on the market that were undated. I suspect therefore that the undated goldine coins were actually done in 1961, and Krause's continued use of "ND (1958)" for KMX Tn2 is an error. UWC has proved, by it's inclusion an subsequent deletion of KMX Tn3, that it's facts for this series are at best mixed up. "Goldine" would be yellowish (brass) in colour. See the difference on this Worthopedia archived ebay sale. So if my theory is correct, bronze ones are original 1958 issues, brassy ones are 1961 restrikes.

Thank you very much, Sap. If I have this straight, then there was actually a set minted in 1958 and one in 1961, and UWC blew it on the ND goldine Half a Buck, assuming it was minted 1958 because it didn't sport a date, but that the goldine coin was really minted in 1961? Is this merely an assumption on the part of Numismaster, or are there any known source that can confirm when the goldine Half a Buck was minted? Thanks again for the information provided.

Also, if these old eyes are at all functioning, it appears that my copper-red colored Half a Buck is an original issue. Thank you for that link.
