Coins Same Year Two Different Mint Mark Styles Thoughts,

Mint marks are punched into the dies with a hand punch on pre 1989 coins. Locations can be in different locations because the are done by hand. Shape can be affected by a couple of things. One different punches used and two punching over the same die making the mint mark looking different. Some years are know for different punches. 1946 had three different styles of mint marks used. 1979-1981 proof coins had different types listed for each year because they used different punches that actually overlapped during those years. A few years had large/small types for different years. 1979-D had a damaged punch used most of the year and later a new punch was used. Something interesting with the Denver the same punches were used on all denominations. Hope this answers your question?
