I have two old silver quarters and one old dime with what some collectors call a "machined edge." The serrations expected are faint to non-existent. The coins aren't damaged and are in a pleasing grade. What causes this condition on some coins? Any input is appreciated.

Maybe the reeding on the edge was very weakly struck... just a thought.

What grade (approx.) would you say that these coins are in? I have some coins that are in Fair to VG-8 where the reeded edge is almost completely worn off, but I would hardly call them 'pleasing'.

They're EF coins. Great detail but the edge is almost smooth.
