I do the same as smallcentguy, I have broken up a few low mintage specimen sets (e.g., 1937, 1965, 1970) for the 1-cent coin. The only time I don't break up the set is when it has a pedigree (e.g., Pittman) with the original box.

I suspect that it is more often the dealers who split up proof and mint sets.
There are no misgivings when they do, it is strictly a commercial decision.
For this to be the case, the value of the sum of the parts would be more than the whole for them.

When you think about all the proof like (pliofilm) sets, Specimen sets and proof sets between the years 1961-1981 that have been split up by collectors and bullion investors? What will happen in 50 years from now when someone actually wants one, will any exist? Glenn

I have collected multiple mint sets of all Australian decimals since 1984. In some cases 5 or more. I nearly have a complete selection of proof sets going back to 1966. In the majority, I have two of each. I also have multiple rolls of (again) nearly all denominations going back to 1966. Add to these I have all the nclt and sterling silver commeratives.
My intention is to (where necessary) cherry pick them and then split them up and put them in a Album. The long term game plan is to have a complete set in an album (plus varieties and commems), a mint and proof set and mint roll for each year. Thats the plan.
I've also started doing much the same with the US sets and proofs, and I have a 1 cent and 5 cent Canadian set that I hope to the same with. However these two countries will prove to be a lot more difficult.
Split them up, I say :-)

Im glad people break up these sets. I primarily just collect pennies and really dont want the whole sets. This means I am able to fill holes in my book with those hard to find ones. There are a few I'm still looking for like the 1998 (1908-1998) in both proof and matte finish, the 2010 (1935-2010) voyager and the 2011 (1911-2011) proof If people didnt break them I would have no hope of getting them. Now I just have to find smallcentguy on ebay lol I've found a few of our other members there and constantly watch their pages for something new and exciting to come up. So in my opinion ... please break them up :D

I've put quite a few mint sets out of their misery, usually for a single coin that I wanted, and had a sick sense of satisfaction while doing so :)

every once in a while I pull out my sets ( that are taking up so much room in my coin cupboard) and I think about breaking them open, then I usually put them away again and think to my self ... one of these days...

Maybe this question has been answered in another thread but I am new to this hobby and would like to know what one means by "slabbing" a coin from a set.
Thanks

When you get a coin graded it is either put into a plastic flip style folder by the grading company (soft slabbed) or into a hard plastic case by the company (hard slabbed). I hope that helps you some.

After placing my order on July 16 of this year, I FINALLY received my 2011 Special Edition Proof Set - 100th Anniversary of the 1911 Silver Dollar. I ordered two sets, one to keep intact and the other to break apart to get the proof large cent out. Significantly lower mintage (6,000) than the 1998 set of similar nature...
