Whaddya have for sandwich stuff? I like salami, egg salad, liverwurst, and BLTs. BTW, what will keep your Rotties from making a Fred sandwich?   That 88-O is the unmintiest Mint State I think any of us have ever seen. We'll never know how the O-mint people let that one slip by. It's really gotta be slabbed...  ...leading into another subtopic: Before the Confederate government took over the New Orleans Mint in 1861, why didn't a local Union commander (or any other officer) take it upon himself to destroy the Mint's dies? |

That is Rottie singular since my male developed Kidney disease and went from happy and healthy to having to be put down in three days after symptoms appeared. I'm still not over that !!
at any rate there is always ample food in the house (one of the many left over compulsive behaviors from childhood)
I think I have finally found undeniable evidence of my claims of this coin being mint state,, I will be attempting to get photographic evidence for you to view,, If I cant then I guess I will just wait for you to come and get it .

Rick, I am deeply sorry to hear about your Rottie. I know all too well how closely we become attached to our pets. I had to put down my 14-yr old kitten Nuisance in June and still haven't gotten over her loss. Oh, you have long since convinced me (and probably the other Morganphiles) it's MS. Its fields are just too clear to be circulated and we've since seen too many other O Morgans which at first blush appear to be circulated but prove to be weak strikes. It's just that your 88-O is such an extreme example. And I've got the same compulsive food behavior left over from the days when my mother shared the philosophy, "A fat baby is a healthy baby.". I feel insecure if there's not enough food in the pantry, then feel guilty if I don't try to eat it all. I probably won't be satisfied on your 88-O until I get my fat fingers wrapped around it and under magnification.  Hubba hubba. Watch out for a fat stranger knocking at your door one of these days.  Happy New Year! It occurs to me that since you're about 300 miles east of me, you'll technically see 2007 about 23 minutes before I do. Save some for me...  Fred |

Fred I need you to send me an email ,, even if its just to tell me to shut up . I lost all of the saved email addresses when my old computer went bad. I was able to photo the coin and show what Iam seeing, but by the time I got it cropped close enough I ended up with about a 26 kb file that is far to small to post on the forum . I hope you have some ability with your processing program so you can expand the pic to the screen? anyways this coin under 16X shows concentric milling lines on the reverse fields and they are also on the design detail especially prominent on the tail ,, in my mind this is conclusive that the coin was weakly struck since those lines on the detail would have been obliterated had they contacted fully with the die. The coin is also certianly a VAM and probly undicovered ,,Breen lists several for the 1888-O wide O but I have no Idea of the attributes of any of them. The reverse is markedly die clashed I can see evidence of the obverse almost all the way around the eagle. anyway ,Fred Have a great New Year !! I look forward to the next round !! Rick |

It occurs to me, Rick - have you weighed this coin? There's no doubt in my mind that it's MS - your obverse photo is good enough to leave no doubt - but the weakness of the reverse strike doesn't balance properly. I'd expect the lower, larger wreath leaves to be flat, and much less detail on the eagle's neck.
Maybe a funny planchet, or a misaligned reverse die.

I have not weighed the coin,, Like a dolt I sold my RCBS grain scale with some other reloading stuff !!
I will have to find a way to weigh it .

Rick, I just happen to have an RCBS 5-10 powder scale which, of course, weighs in grains, the unit in which all Morgans should be weighed. I would be more than happy to weigh it for you. Just send it over...  Fred |
